- SHAREWARE
-
- Win Gourmet is distributed as shareware. Shareware is not a type of
- software, rather it is a method of marketing. Shareware allows you to
- evaluate a software package BEFORE you decide whether or not you want to
- spend your hard-earned dollars on it. In the case of Win Gourmet you are
- entitled to a 30-day evaluation period. During this time you may use Windows
- Gourmet, unrestricted, to determine whether it suits your needs. If you are
- satisfied with the software and wish to continue using it beyond this 30-day
- period, you must register. After you have registered you will be provided
- with the current registered version of Win Gourmet. This version is
- essentially the same as the evaluation version, with a few registration
- "reminders" removed. It is illegal (and not very nice) to continue using the
- software without registering it. Registration provides you with other
- benefits such as printed documentation and discounts on upgrades. It also
- facilitates the future development of Win Gourmet. Registration
- information, as well as an order form, follow on the next couple pages.

- ASSOCIATION OF SHAREWARE PROFESSIONALS

- Professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that the shareware principle
- works for you. If you are unable to resolve a shareware-related problem with
- an ASP member by contacting the member directly, ASP may be able to help.
- The ASP Ombudsman can help you resolve a dispute or problem with an ASP
- member, but does not provide technical support for members' products.
-
- Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at 545 Grover Road, Muskegon, MI
- 49442-9427 USA, FAX 616-788-2765 or send a CompuServe message via CompuServe

- INTRODUCTION
-
- Win Gourmet is an easy to use database designed to catalog recipes
- and plan meals. It can categorize and save hundreds of recipes, displaying
- them in a natural "recipe card"-like fashion on your screen. You may print
- out recipes or simply use your screen as a reference as you prepare them.
- You can easily adjust the size of the display so you can see the recipe on
- your computer screen from across the kitchen.
-
- Win Gourmet also has a powerful Meal function which allows you to
- put together a family dinner or a brunch with friends. You may select
- several recipes, adjust their servings for the number of people you'll be
- having, and print out a shopping list of everything you'll need to prepare
- the meal. You can turn a recipe for a 2-person soup into a 40-serving feast,
- or reduce 30 servings worth of cookies to a manageable dozen.
-
- The interface is simple enough that an experienced computer user
- should be able to get around with little or no extra information. For those
- not quite so confident, this guide will take you step-by-step through
- creating your own recipes and meals. As the guide progresses you will get
- into more advanced feature such as preparing a Meal, adjusting servings, and
- creating a shopping list.
-
- On-Line help is available from almost anywhere within the program, so
- you may not need this manual. You can get a listing of all of the help
- topics by choosing Contents from the Help menu.
-
- I have put a lot of work into Win Gourmet and I hope you enjoy it.
- And please, if it is something you would like to keep, please register. I'm
- also always looking for ways to improve Win Gourmet so please give me
- any suggestions for enhancements that you may come up with.
-

-
- WHAT'S NEW
-
- Import/Export Capability
- Win Gourmet can now export to text files in either Win Gourmet or
- Meal-Master 8.0x format. Win Gourmet can also import these files
- allowing you to easily exchange recipes with other users of Win Gourmet
- as well as other recipe programs.
-
- Headings
- There is now an option, when editing an ingredient, to designate it as a
- Heading. These are lines in the ingredient list that will display without
- a quantity or unit of measure, and are not included in the shopping list.
- They also display against the left margin to clearly highlight logical
- groupings of ingredients such as Crust and Filling for a recipe for pie.
-
- Bookmark
- If you select Save Bookmark on Exit under File|Preferences, Windows
- Gourmet will save your current recipe on exit so the next time you start
- Win Gourmet, you re looking at the same recipe.
-
- Shopping Lists
- Your shopping list is now saved when you exit so you do not need to re-
- select the recipes for your meal every time you start Win Gourmet. Also,
- as you add recipes to your meal, the ingredients are automatically appended
- to your shopping list.
-
- Meals
- In conjunction with your shopping list, Win Gourmet now saves the
- recipes in your meal, as well as the current number of servings. When you
- start Win Gourmet, the meal recipes and servings will be the same as
- when you exited. To make the option of resetting your meal easy, an
- additional button has been added to the Meal|Recipes screen to clear your
- recipes and start anew.
-
- More Recipes
- Win Gourmet now comes with over 60 built-in recipes, up from the 20 or
- so that the original version contained. Also, there were many spelling
- errors in the first batch of recipes that went out, this version's
- collection has been run through a more thorough spell check.
-
- Memory
- For those with limited system resources, the method of storing recipes in
- RAM has been optimized to take only about 1/3 as much memory as previous
- versions. In other words, what may have only been enough room for 100
- recipes before can now fit 300.
-
- Shopping List Bug
- There was a nasty little bug in the last version that would cause a General
- Protection Fault when creating a shopping list. This bug has been squashed
- now.
-
-
-
-
-
- Win Gourmet 1.25 3
-
- Help File
- The Online help has been snazzed up some. There are entries for the new
- features, as well as a few graphics here and there. There is also a more
- consistent format overall.
-
-
-
-
-
- Win Gourmet 1.25 4
-
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
-
- To successfully use Win Gourmet, you must have at least the
- following system configuration:
-
- IBM 386 or compatible computer
- Microsoft Windows 3.1
- 1 Megabyte of free RAM
- Hard drive with 1 megabyte of free space
-
- More disk space and RAM may be required for storing of additional recipes
- and saving large shopping lists. However, these requirements are modest, and
- it is unlikely and an individual would find themselves without enough disk
- space or RAM for Win Gourmet's needs.

- FINDING RECIPES
-
- Before you begin entering your own recipes, you'll probably want to
- look around a bit and learn how Win Gourmet functions with the recipes
- included. Win Gourmet comes with a number of recipes already entered.
-
- To locate a recipe in the Win Gourmet cookbook, select Find Recipe
- from the Recipe menu or press Ctrl+F. This option will take you into the
- "Find Recipe" dialog box. To locate a recipe, select the category to which
- it belongs from the Category box at the top. You may also obtain an
- alphabetical listing of all of the recipes by selecting All in the Category
- box.
-
- Once you have located the recipe that you wish to display, highlight
- that recipe with your mouse and click OK. You may also double-click on a
- recipe to select it. If you wish to leave the Find Recipe dialog box without
- selecting a recipe, click on CANCEL.
-
- If you currently have a recipe displayed on the screen, you can
- quickly browse through the other recipes using the "Next Recipe" and
- "Previous Recipe" options under the Recipe menu. You may also use your left
- and right arrow keys for the same purpose.
-
-
-
-
-

-
- PRINTING RECIPES
-
- If you wish to print out a recipe, you must first select the recipe as
- described under FINDING RECIPES. Then, simply select Print from the File
- menu or Ctrl+P to print the recipe out on your default printer.
-
- The print facility is limited in that it will only print the currently
- displayed recipe. It does not yet have the functionality to select a list of
- recipes to print or to print on custom paper sizes such as index cards.
-
-
-
-
-
- Win Gourmet 1.25 7
-
- PREFERENCES
-
- Selecting Preferences from the File menu brings up the Preferences
- dialog box. In here you may set the default category and servings for new
- recipes and meals. You may also turn the new Bookmark feature on or off.
-
- The default category is the category that any new recipe you create
- will be assigned at the time it is created. You always have the option to
- change the category while editing the recipe, this just saves a step when
- you plan on entering many recipes which fall into the same category.
-
- The default servings option is similar to the default category option.
- It is the number of servings that each recipe is assigned when created,
- which can also be changed when editing the recipe.
-
- Enabling the Bookmark feature tells Win Gourmet to mark your place
- when exiting the software. Then, the next time you start Win Gourmet,
- you'll be looking at the same recipe as when you last exited. If this
- feature is disabled, then you will get the familiar "No Recipe Selected"
- display on startup.

-
- CREATING RECIPES
-
- To enter a new recipe for the Win Gourmet cookbook, select New
- Recipe from the Recipe menu or press Ctrl+N. The Edit Recipe dialog box
- should then appear. Fill in this box with all of the appropriate information
- as described below:
-
- Field Description
- Name This is just the name of your recipe, "Uncle Joe's Chili," for
- example.
-
- Source This describes where this recipe is from. "Church Picnic" is a
- good example.
-
- Category This determines what category of recipe you are creating. It is
- used mainly in the Find Recipe dialog box to sort your recipes,
- as well as during exports to Meal-Master files. If you click on
- this box, you will be presented with a list of all available
- categories. To change the default category, see PREFERENCES.
-
- Servings Put here the number of people that this recipe, as it's
- described, will serve. This value will become important when you
- use the meal function later to adjust the ingredient portions
- for your recipe.
-
- Ingredients Here will be listed all of the ingredients included in your
- recipe. Use the Add, Edit, Insert and Delete buttons here. See
- EDITING INGREDIENTS for more detailed information.
-
- Directions In this box, you may enter the directions for preparing the
- recipe.
-
- You will also notice a check box at the bottom of this dialog box that
- reads Include in Meal. If you check this box, this recipe will
- automatically be added to your current meal.
-
- After everything has been filled in, click OK to save the recipe to
- the Win Gourmet cookbook. If you change your mind about creating this

-
- EDITING RECIPES
-
- To edit a recipe that's already created, you must first select it
- through the Find Recipe option on the Recipe menu. Then, with the recipe
- displayed on your screen, select Edit Recipe from the Recipe menu or press
- Ctrl+E. You will be taken to the Edit Recipe dialog. This functions the same
- as described under CREATING RECIPES except all of the boxes will be filled

-
- EDITING INGREDIENTS
-
- To edit ingredients, you must be in the Edit Recipe dialog box. For
- information on getting to the Edit Recipe dialog box see CREATING RECIPES or
- EDITING RECIPES.
-
- The are four options for editing your ingredient list:
-
- The ADD button brings up the Edit Ingredient dialog box and allows you
- to enter information for a new ingredient.
-
- The EDIT button will bring up the Edit Ingredient dialog box with the
- information for the currently highlighted ingredient. You may also
- edit an ingredient by double-clicking on the ingredient.
-
- The INSERT button works similarly to the ADD button, except any
- ingredient added with the INSERT option will appear just before the
- currently highlighted ingredient, not at the end of the list.
-
- The DELETE button will remove the currently highlighted ingredient
- from the ingredient list.
-
- The Edit Ingredient dialog box contains the following fields:
-
- Quantity This is the quantity of the ingredient you are currently
- editing. You may enter any integer or fractions in the form
- "x/y." Some sample quantities are 1, 2 1/4, 2/3, and 5 3/4. You
- may leave the quantity box blank if it does not apply (for
- instance, "pepper to taste" would not require a quantity.)
-
- Unit Here, you would enter the unit of measure that is appropriate
- for your ingredient. You can also click your mouse on the button
- next to this box for a list of common units.
-
- Item This is the ingredient itself.
-
- There is a "Heading Row" check box at the bottom of this dialog box. If you
- check this box, then this ingredient becomes a heading, with no quantity or
- unit and is just used to separate different groups of ingredients each other.
- For example a pie might have a heading for the crust and another for the
- filling.
-
- As with other dialog boxes, you click OK to save your changes, CANCEL to
- abort them.

-
- CREATING A MEAL
-
- Before we get in to how to create a Meal, a quick definition is in
- order. A Meal, as Win Gourmet sees it, is a collection of recipes. There
- is nothing special about these recipes except that they have been assigned
- to the meal. The capabilities of the meal come into play with its ability to
- convert the recipes you select to all reflect the same number of servings
- that you have specified for the meal. This frees your time to prepare the
- food without trying to figure out the mathematics of making sure everyone
- gets fed and nothing gets wasted.
-
-
-
-
-
- Win Gourmet 1.25 12
-
- MEAL SERVINGS
-
- To set the number of servings for the meal, select Servings from the
- Meal menu. In the Meal Servings dialog box you may tell Win Gourmet how
- many people the meal will be servings. The default is for the Meal to make
- no adjustment to the servings of each recipe. If you wish to make all of the
- selected recipes reflect one number of servings, you must un-check the box
- labeled "Use Individual Recipe Servings." Then in the box above, you may
- enter the number of servings you wish for the meal. For information on
- setting a default, see PREFERENCES.
-
- When you have decided on your number of servings, click OK to
- continue, or CANCEL to return to the previous setting.
-
-
-
-
-
- Win Gourmet 1.25 13
-
- MEAL RECIPES
-
- Now that your servings have been set, you may select the recipes that
- you wish to include in your meal. First select Recipes from the Meal menu to
- bring up the Meal Recipes dialog. From here there are a few options as
- listed below:
-
- ADD activates the Find Recipe dialog box and allows you to select a
- recipe to be included in your meal. You may also add a recipe to the
- meal by checking the "Include in Meal" box when creating or editing a
- recipe.
-
- VIEW will display the currently highlighted recipe on the screen
- including any changes made to the ingredient quantities.
- Note: If you use the Previous/Next recipe commands while displaying a
- recipe with "adjusted" quantities, the recipe display will default
- back to the original servings for the recipe. The meal will not be
- affected, just the display.
-
- DELETE will remove the currently highlighted recipe from the meal. The
- recipe will still be in your cookbook, but will not longer be included
- in the meal.
-
- CLEAR will remove ALL recipes from the meal. You will also be
- presented with an option to clear the shopping list simultaneously if
- you desire.
-
- You may not abandon the changes you've made in the Meal Recipes dialog
- box. Click CLOSE to exit this dialog box.

-
- SHOPPING LIST
-
- To access the shopping list choose Shopping List from the Meal menu.
- This will take you into the Shopping List dialog box. You should be
- presented with a listing of the ingredients for any recipe you have selected
- for your Meal. The ingredients will be adjusted to reflect the number of
- servings you have selected for the Meal. The options available in the
- Shopping List dialog box are listed below:
-
- ADD puts a new item at the end of the Shopping List. The Edit
- Ingredient dialog will come on the screen to enter the appropriate
- information.
-
- EDIT activates the Edit Ingredient dialog so you may change the
- currently selected item.
-
- DELETE removes the currently highlighted item from the shopping list.
-
- PRINT will print a list of all of the items in the shopping list to
- your default printer.
-
- RESTORE will clear the shopping list and regenerate it from the
- recipes and servings selected for the Meal.
-
- CLEAR removes all items from the shopping list.
-
-
- To exit the Shopping List dialog, click on CLOSE.

-
- IMPORTING RECIPES
-
- Win Gourmet has the ability to import recipes from standard ASCII text
- files. The formats currently selected are Win Gourmet and Meal Master
- 8.0x. Text files from other sources, as well as versions of Meal-Master
- before 8.0x will not be imported into Win Gourmet. If you have a file in
- another recipe format, you may wants to look for one of the many shareware
- software packages available for converting recipe files to the Meal-Master
- format. You could then import the resulting Meal-Master file.
-
- To import recipes, select the Import option from the File menu. Click on the
- BROWSE button, select the file you wish to import from your drive, and click
- OK. If the file is not valid, you will receive an error message.
-
- When you have returned to the dialog box, with the name of the recipe file
- listed at the top, you have a few options to determine which recipes to
- import.
-
- ALL RECIPES will bring in every single recipe in the text file.
-
- RECIPE RANGE allows you to import a specific range of recipes. Recipes
- 10 through 25, for instance.
-
- SELECTED RECIPES brings up a list at the bottom of the dialog with all
- recipes that are contained in the export file. You can click on each
- of the individual recipes that you wish to import.
-
- After you have selected the recipes you wish to import, click OK to continue
- the process, CANCEL to abort.

-
- EXPORTING RECIPES
-
- The Export selection, found on the File menu, allows you to save recipes
- created in Win Gourmet into a format that can be easily shared with
- other Win Gourmet users. You can also save files into a Meal-Master 8.0x
- format for friends who do not use Window Gourmet.
-
- The Format section of the Export Recipes dialog box lets you choose between
- Win Gourmet and Meal-Master format.
-
- Window Gourmet gives the most information and is best when posting
- messages to computer bulletin boards and for sharing recipes with
- other Win Gourmet users.
-
- The Meal-Master format is best for sharing recipes with users of the
- Meal-Master recipe program, or other recipe programs that can read
- Meal-Master files.
-
-
- The Export section lets you choose which recipes you wish to export.
-
- Current Recipe will just export the currently displayed recipe. If no
- recipe is selected, this option will be grayed out.
-
- Recipes in Meal will export all recipes currently defined in your
- meal, including any change to yield you may have defined.
-
- All Recipes will export all recipes in the current cookbook.
-
- Click OK to begin the export, CANCEL to return to Window Gourmet without
- exporting any recipes.
-
-
